# Flow 3: Receive money

<div className="hop-lede">Fiat arrives through <span className="hop-strong">deposit instructions</span>, crypto through a <span className="hop-strong">wallet</span>. Either way the result is a payin (<code>pi\_</code>) that names the balance it credited.</div>

A shared account (<code>memo</code> set) needs the memo on the payment, or the deposit cannot be credited automatically. Named virtual accounts need flow 2 first.</div>

  <div className="hop-footnote">Known gaps: a <code>pending</code> payin has no documented duration and no settlement event beyond the single <code>payin.received</code>. Returned deposits have no event (<code>payin.returned</code> is reserved); detect them by re-reading <code>status</code>. A deposit in a currency the account has no instruction for has no documented outcome.</div>

## Troubleshooting

| Signal | Meaning | Do this |

| No instruction for the currency | The list has no entry and the single-currency endpoint returns `status: unavailable`. | Ask Hop to enable the currency. |
| Payer omitted or altered the memo | The deposit is not attributed automatically and requires offline review and attribution, there is no API signal until it is credited. | Contact Hop for offline attribution |
| Wallet `address` is `null` | The wallet is not yet available | Poll [Get Wallet](/fx/api-reference/wallets/get-wallet); do not publish a null address. |
